The town, named in honor of Jacob Van Meter, was platted in 1868 under its original name Tracey.  Van Meter is one mile south of I-80 at exit 113, in the Raccoon River Valley west of downtown Des Moines.  Van Meter's 2000 Census was 866.

 A historical building we have in Van Meter is the Bob Feller Museum. Bob Feller is a MLB Hall of Fame pitcher that use to go to our school. He played for the Cleveland Indians and now has a building for him.
